Popular Questions

The most asked questions that we get from our clients when they are considering a new heating & cooling system for their home.

1. How much does it cost to get a Comfort Advisor to evaluate my home and get a quote?

Jazz Heating and Air Conditioning will provide a free, no obligation estimate for the system and installation, along with options to choose from. Replacing your HVAC System is a big investment, but it’s also a great opportunity to improve your home’s comfort, air quality, and energy efficiency. Call us at 925.291.0900 to set up an appointment or schedule online with one of our Comfort Advisor, and they can walk you through the different options for your new HVAC system!

2. What size system do I need?

Simply matching your existing system’s specifications may not be your best buy, especially if you’ve added on to your home. An HVAC system that is too small cannot deliver adequate heating or cooling in extreme weather. And a system that is too large will not only cost more but provide poorer temperature and humidity control. To ensure that your new HVAC system is the right size for your home, Jazz Heating and Air Conditioning will perform a detailed load calculation. This calculation determines the capacity of the equipment needed and the correct distribution of air to each room.

3. Do I need multiple heating and cooling zones?

Once we evaluate your home and your comfort needs, we will be able to help you decide if zoning is the right fit and if so select the right equipment for a zoning system that supports greater comfort and energy savings.

4. Should I replace all of my HVAC equipment at the same time?

The short answer is yes. You want to be sure that all the parts of your HVAC system work together properly. Replacing only the outdoor unit or the indoor unit of an HVAC system may appear to save money, but it could contribute to service problems later on. A mismatched system may not deliver the energy efficiency or performance that you expect. If an older part of the system—such as an outdoor unit of a heat pump, ductwork, piping or a furnace—is replaced, it’s important to match the new part as closely as possible to the existing system. Installing a new high-efficiency heat pump, for example, but using the old ductwork could affect performance. That ductwork may be leaky, restricted or inadequate—and may not be sized for your new heat pump. Ductwork should be properly sealed and insulated, and it should be sized for your new system. We can thoroughly inspect your ductwork to identify any problems.

5. Are permits required for replacing my HVAC system?

Property owners who change out their warm-air heating, ventilating or air-conditioning (HVAC) system need to make sure that their state-licensed contractor takes out a building permit from their local building department to avoid fines and additional repairs. Building permits generate routine inspections to help assure that the system was installed properly, is functioning efficiently, meets Home Energy Rating System (HERS) testing and verification requirements, and complies with the State Building Energy Efficiency Standards.

6. When is it time to replace your HVAC System?

You have many choices when it comes to selecting an HVAC system. Here are some things to consider:
• Age of the system (i.e. some older systems require R22 Freon which is being phased out by year 2020 and is thus is expensive)
• Extent of the problems (i.e. extensive issues with blower motor, compressor and/or condenser coil)
• Cost of Repairs (i.e. do repairs amount to more than 50% of a cost of the new unit?)
• Efficiency of the unit (i.e. is your unit less than 13 SEER?)
• Frequency of repairs (i.e. did you have three or more major repairs on the unit?)
• Size of the unit (i.e. under or over-sized units lead to inefficiencies and premature failure)

7. Do you offer financing?

We have many choices when it comes to financing your new HVAC system. Most systems qualify for our best offer at 0% 60 months. Ask us more.
